Sharon Evon
Singleton
Jul 14, 1947 — Jan 19, 2024
Sharon Evon Singleton, 76, was born July 14, 1947, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Junius Hambrick and Nellie Huff.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, and sister.
Sharon was the 2nd eldest of 7 children. In her younger years she enjoyed skating, oil canvas painting, sewing, dancing, and singing. At the age of 12, she began singing songs from the radio. By the age of 15, she came to the realization that she could sing. Some of her favorite artists were Billie Holiday, Mary Wells, and the Emotions, sure to be playing on a Saturday morning.
Sharon mastered her education in private and public schools in Kansas City, Missouri. She attended Glennon All girls Catholic School and Central High School, graduating Class of '65, with honors, receiving a full Scholarship to the KC Art Institute.
However, she had a love for the skies and decided to become a flight attendant for TWA. Sharon also held positions for Administrative Assistant, to the Director of the Kansas City Public School District, Property Manager for several Housing and Urban Development properties and prior to retiring, American Red Cross of Wyandotte County.
Sharon married her high school sweetheart Robert E. Whiteside on August 2, 1966. During their 20-year union, 2 daughters were born. Tonya and Sheryl.
After performing, one evening she met friends Raynola Ortega and Sharon Thompson. They formed the group Solid Gold and harmonized throughout some of KC's hottest music scenes and festivals.
Sharon's fondness of sewing allowed her to make their costumes, sometimes overnight for the next night's gig.
Sharon adored being a mother and she loved her family. Never to miss a day of cooking warm delicious meals and making sack lunches for school with a handwritten love note inside. Her favorite meal to prepare was roast carrots and potatoes or roast, mashed potatoes with gravy and butter beans.
Jokingly her girls would say the weekends couldn't come quick enough for a simple bowl of cereal for breakfast, a ham sandwich for lunch and a hamburger for dinner.
Sharon married Vander Singleton and they rescued an Australian Shepard named Tinker and a kitten named Muffin. She would spoil her second set of girls until her health began to decline.
Sharon is deeply missed, greatly loved, and will forever be in our hearts. She departed this life surrounded by her daughters and grandchildren.
She leaves to cherish her everlasting memory: Daughters, Tonya Whiteside, KCMO; Sheryl Holden (Christopher), KCMO; 9 Grandchildren, Xavier, Taren, Dayon, Deauna, KCMO, Sha'Kecia, Michigan, Christopher II, De'Ante, Kha' Marri and Christian KCMO; 2 Brothers and 2 sisters; 1 lifelong friend Juliet Washington; 1 best friend Doris Nicholson; and a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends.
