Shirley Mae (Griggs) Dumas was born March 12, 1937 in Summerville, Tennessee to Judge Griggs and Lucy Mary (Watkins) Griggs. Her parents and two older sisters Hattie Newby and Willola Parker preceded her in death.
Shirley received her education in Kansas City, Missouri and later received an Associate Degree in Accounting at a Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City. She worked 30 years with the Missouri Division of Family Services as a Social Worker. During those 30 years she worked in the downtown Social Services Office and later at the Truman Medical Center for 10 years before her retirement. Her colleagues and clients described her as the most outstanding social worker of her time. She was commissioned with the gift of guidance and advice to those who needed help. She was always prepared to give an answer to any question that was posed to her.
Shirley was a member of Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City, MO under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Wallace Hartsfield, Sr. and current Pastor, Rev. Dr. Wallace S. Hartsfield II, where she professed her faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of her life. In her later years she married Paul Walter Dumas, Jr. and was married to him for thirty-five years. He preceded her in death on April 10, 2006. Her son Brian Lane Rountree preceded her in death on February 28, 2018.
She leaves to cherish her memory, daughters Billie Kay Laurie and Jessica Sanders, both of Tucson, AZ, DeBra Walton (Curtis), Blue Springs, MO, Charita Love, Kansas City, MO, Benita Rountree, Blue Springs, MO, Patrice Dumas Veraguth, Independence, MO; sons Stanley Rountree and Billie Leroy Rountree, both of Kansas City, MO and Paul W. Dumas III of Blue Springs, MO. Special cousins, Mary Augmon (Claude), Kansas City MO, Mary Joe Love and Terry Taylor, both of Olathe, KS; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, relatives and friends.
Shirley Dumas, 84, died Thursday, January 07, 2021, at Truman Gardens. Services will be Thursday, January 14, 2021 at 11:00 am. at Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors Chapel. Interment Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation 10-11am. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences maybe shared on our website.
