White
Feb 19, 1932 — Sep 18, 2019
Shyrlye White, 87, was born February 19, 1932 in Kansas City, Missouri to Collins Gilmore and Pearl Adams. She was preceded in death by both parents, two brothers Sidney McFarland and Eugene McFarland. Shyrlye departed this life September 18, 2019 while in the home of her son and under the care of Ascend Hospice Center.
Shyrlye attended school in the Kansas City Public Schools and graduated from Lincoln High School in the class of 1949. During her school years she was among the first to have a Kansas City Call paper route. Shyrlye married William White Sr. and to this union two children were born, Cheryll and William (Robbie) Jr.
She was employed for over 40 years at the Social Security Administration, which eventually lead her to relocate to Baltimore, Marilyn in 1971. In her early years she was a member of Centennial United Methodist Church 1834 Woodland. When Shyrlye moved to Baltimore, she became a member of United Church of Jesus Christ under the leadership of Bishop Monroe Saunders. She was an avid church member and was active in the missionary ministry. In 1988, she traveled to Liberia, West Africa. On completing her missionary ministry, she traveled to Barbados to visit with Ms. Herbert, a former Liberian at Lincoln High School and the director of the Kansas City YWCA. Shyrlyes' stay in Barbados lasted six months. She loved to travel and extended her travels with her high school classmates on numerous trips to reunions, conventions and even a cruise.
Shyrlye returned to Kansas City in 1999 and settled in Bonner Springs, Kansas. She became a member of Greater Pentecostal Temple Kansas City, Kansas. In 2018, the church recognized her as "Mother of the Year".
Shyrlye was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She was also a longtime member of Lincoln High Class of 1949 Alumni Association and served as the condolence secretary. She belonged to a bowling league during her early years in Kansas City and bowled at the neighborhood bowling alley, Melody Lane on 41st and Indiana. Shyrlye also was an avid tennis player. She had an artistic talent and loved weaving and ceramic which she shared with her family, friends and classmates.
Shyrlye enjoyed thrift store shopping. She knew to purchase the best and leave the rest. Very seldom did you see her without a fancy hat, mostly like purchased from one of her favorite thrift shops. She was known to be fashionable and could always respond to others with a witty saying about being old.
She leaves to cherish her memories: one daughter Cheryll White-Perkins (Dale) and one son William (Robbie) White, Jr., (Karen) both of Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Beverly McFarland- Story, San Diego, Ca. and Glenda Hall, Kansas City, Mo.; one brother Carl McFarland, Cleveland, Ohio; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
