Sonya Renee Baston, 64, KCMO, went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on May 26, 2016. She was born November 21, 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri to the union of Greenberry Harrison El and Eva Mae Fight. She was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings, Clarice, Betty, Ernest, Richard and Delores Parks. Sonya was united in marriage to Dr. Jackie R. Baston on July 3, 1965. To this union five sons were born, Justin, Brandon, Todd, Trevor and Franklin (who expired at birth). She received the Lord Jesus Christ at St. Mark's Union Church, under the leadership of Rev. Sam Mann. Sonya was educated in the KCMO School District beginning at Attucks Elementary, Lincoln Junior High and graduating with honors from Lincoln High School in 1969. She attended Avila College (now Avila University) and graduated from Rockhurst College (now Rockhurst University) in 1973 with a degree in Psychology. She furthered her education at Penn Valley Community College earning her certification as a Registered Nurse. Sonya was employed as a social worker for the Division of Family Services in Kansas City. She worked for the City of KCMO for several years before working for Truman Medical Center. as a staff registered nurse. She completed her professional career as the Director of Nursing in the Early Childhood Education Department of the KCMO School District. From the ages of six until she was seventeen, Sonya danced with the Smith Sisters Dance Studio and the Dance Masters of America. She was very good dancer and a wonderful two-stepper. She also played the violin in high school, holding first chair in the orchestra. She was inducted in to the national Honor Society during her sophomore year of high school and was elected as Who's Who Among High School Seniors, where she also maintained four years of perfect attendance. She was among the first founding class of Upward at Rockhurst in 1965. Sonya is survived by her husband of forty-one years, Dr. Jackie R. Baston; four sons, Justin C. Baston (Teilisa), Brandon J. Baston, Todd C. Baston (Winona) and Trevor R. Baston (Takisha); two siblings, Deborah Munson (Herman) and Greenberry Harrison El, Jr.; one brother-in-law, Sonny Baston; two sisters-in-law, Odessa Parks and Linda Parks; two grandchildren, Todd 'T.J.' Baston, Jr. and Cadence 'Katie Bug' Baston, who were the loves of her life; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, June 4, 11:00 a.m. at Metropolitan Spiritual Church of Christ. Interment Brooking Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
