Obituary

Steven Lamar Gilbert, 48, KCMO, passed away at Truman Medical Center on December 11, 2016. He was born January 30, 1968 in Kansas City, Missouri to the union of Daphne Gilbert and Steven Baston. Both parents; one daughter, Tanya Gilbert and his brother-in-law, Linson Nelson, Jr. preceded him in death. 'Steve', as he was affectionately known, was educated in the public schools of Kansas City, Missouri. He was previously employed by Jackson County Parks and Recreation before he began working as a concierge for the Kansas City Chiefs until his health began to fail. Steve was a born again believer in Jesus Christ. He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Emeritus Dr. Wallace S. Hartsfield, Sr. He later became a member of Mount Carmel Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Frank Williams. Steve was a faithful member and served with the Brotherhood until his death. Steve was married to the love of his life, Tanya (Nelson) Gilbert for fourteen. They spent time taking of each other, traveling and being a blessing to the church, family and others. Steve will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him. He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife, Tanya Gilbert; four brothers, Anthony Gilbert, Tyrone Gilbert (Jennifer), Lashore Howard (Betty) and Darrell Jones, Sr.; one sister, Catherine Boston; step-mother, Maxine Baston; maternal grandmother, Jerealine Gilbert; two uncles, Jackie Baston and Claude Baston (Donna); father and mother-in-law, Rev. and Mrs. Linson Nelson, Sr.; sister-in-law, LaWanda Jackson (Karl); childhood friends, Phillip Howard, Gene Howard, Sr. and Grant Pittman; the 33rd Street Brotherhood; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Friday, December 23, 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church. Interment XII Gates Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the church.
