Obituary

Steven A. Johnson, passed away peacefully, Thursday, May 28, 2020 surrounded by his family. He was born January 8, 1960 to Frances Johnson and Leon Riggs in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He is preceded in death by both parents; grandparents Ross and Louise Johnson, grandmother Ida McDowell and grandfather Shedrin Riggs; brother Jeffrey Johnson; aunts Brenda Johnson-Seeley and Patricia Miller; uncles Lloyd Johnson, Wilbur Johnson and Walter McDowell Sr.

He accepted Christ at an early age and in recent years joined the Progressive Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend William F. Snorgrass. Steve attended schools in Tahlequah, Oklahoma and was a painter by trade. He worked several years for Newsome Reality, painting and maintaining their properties, until he sustained an injury that prevented him from doing so any longer.

Steve was a great cook and enjoyed barbecuing for family and friends during summer months. He took pride in cooking greens that was tender and seasoned to perfection and made a Tamale Pie that was the grandchildren's number one request for their birthdays and just about any special occasion that occurred. He enjoyed fishing, playing dominoes and watching sports. He was an avid fan of the Kansas City Royals, Oklahoma University (OU) and a true Kansas City Chiefs fanatic. Anything made with the Chiefs logo, he had to have it. Every Red Friday and Chiefs game day, you could find him in Chiefs apparel, accessories and jewelry from head to toe. If you wanted a good argument, say something bad about the Chiefs. It was very comical to watch him and his brother in law James battle over who was the best, the Chiefs or the Broncos. He was able to experience a dream come true like so many others when the Chiefs won the Superbowl, you would have thought he had won the lottery.

Steve loved children and children loved Steve. He could make a baby smile without trying and a child stop crying by just saying one word to them. Steve met JaRita Williams in 1998 and after a brief courtship, they were married August 14, 1999, creating a blended family.

He is survived by his wife, JaRita ;a son, Brandon Brown, Kansas City, MO; daughters Ny'Iesha Johnson, Kansas City, MO and Robyn Johnson-Colston, Lebanon, MO; grandchildren, Brandon Brown Jr., Elyse Brown, Cortnie Fletcher, JaRi Fletcher and JaRell Johnson, all of Kansas City MO; brothers ,Brian Johnson, Kansas City, MO, Kevin Johnson, Sherman Riggs, Alfred Riggs, Tahlequah, OK and Darryl Riggs (Kristi), Commerce, OK; Sisters, Sherry Brown (Daniel), Kansas City Mo; Loretta Riggs and Scherry Riggs, Wagner, Ok and Shanell Riggs, Tahlequah, Ok. In addition he leaves his daughters by extension Donna Hyche and Krystal Sydnor, their children Tatyanna Lloyd, Zoe Hyche, Brea'ona Sydnor, Da'Jion Sydnor, Va'y Sydnor and Von Sydnor, all of Kansas City, MO and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
