Obituary

Susan Joan Hyner, 86, was born December 29, 1929 in Kansas City, Missouri to Josephine Davis and Robert Williams. She was the youngest of twelve all of whom preceded her in death, along with her husband Harry Hyner whom she called the love of her life, her only niece Josephine Walker and her first and only great grandson Demetri Brown who brought her so much joy. As a lifetime area resident, Susan was a graduate of Lincoln High School. She began her career as a Southwestern Bell employee before retiring from AT&T, from which she received several service awards. She later became a successful relator along with her brother Robert Williams, as owners of Phase 2 Relators located on 22nd & Prospect, continuing the family legacy of being one of the first African American Relators in the Kansas City Area. Susan was also a founder in the historically known 18th and Vine Jazz & Blues District, notably owning the Blue Room, an accomplishment she was proud of and will live on as her legacy. Susan, having lost her parents at an early age, she depended on her oldest sister Celest to raise her and the other children. Known by her siblings as 'Baby' and grandchildren as 'GiGi', she had an enduring belief in humanity's ability to find a way forward. Susan loved her family, especially her granddaughters, and felt they were her greatest legacy. They cared for her until the very end. Susan was an outgoing, sassy and classy woman who enjoyed gardening, traveling and playing Bid Wiz. Though Susan had no church affiliation, she had a strong belief in God and was quick to pray for others, offering prayer and words of comfort in their time of need. Susan departed this life on March 7, 2016 at Kansas City Hospice House. She will be greatly missed. Left to cherish Susan's memory and triumph are her granddaughters, Michelle Carter (Van), Felisha Smith, Deja Carter and Mikayla Carter; grandsons, Jerelle Smith and Marcus Smith; daughters-in-law, Carolyn Mason and Patricia Hill; nephews, Otis H Williams, Byron K. Williams, Walter D. Williams and Bobby Williams; niece, Mildred Murrell; great nieces, Desiree Mulinazzi (Matt) and Andrea Walton; six great-great nephews and nieces, Mariah Mulinazzi, Aliyah Mulinazzi, Shonnah Mulinazzi, Kaylah Mulinazzi, Azriel Mulinazzi and Caleb Mulinazzi; a host of other relatives and friends.
