Obituary

Terry Lynn Brown was the born at Queen of the World Hospital on November 18, 1957. She is preceded in death by both parents, Betty Jean Brown and Oliver "Maxie" Brown, uncle and aunts, Edward and Venita Mitchell, Alice Foster and a cousin Stephen G. Ward.

Terry passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 20, 2020. She attended Central High School and was a proud Blue Eagle, Class of 1976. She was baptized at Providence Missionary Baptist Church and had been a long and faithful member of Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, Drs. Wallace Hartsfield, I & II and enjoyed singing in the choir for several years.

Terry was a licensed certified teacher for the Kansas City MO School district in Elementary Education from 1986 until her retirement in 2011. She served in many positions from classroom teacher, child care facilitator to home health care giver. She received her B.A. Degree in Psychology from William Jewell College and UMKC Kansas City, a B.A. in Elementary Education from UMKC Kansas City, and a Masters of Arts in Teaching from Webster University.

Terry was known for her outgoing personality and enjoyed being the life of the party. For many years, she hosted annual birthday parties and delivered a gala event each time. Many will always remember her for that whistle. In addition to her passion for traveling, she also was very dedicated to the Central Class of 1976 and attended every function she could.

She took a keen interest in her students, mentoring and following their lives for many years after teaching them in her classes. Parents were always impressed in her passion and dedication for helping out her students, for going the extra mile to groom them to be successful in life and would approach her many years later and talk about how much she meant to her students.

Terry was a strong willed but an extremely empathetic person who had genuine concerns for the needs of others and tried to help in any way possible. Her friends were her lifelong friends to the end. During her mother's last years, she left her passion for teaching early to take care of her mother full time. It was a sacrifice she did not mind having to do because the bond between them was unbreakable.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her cousins Ruby, Rickey & RaShondra Banks (and family), Michael (Monica) Lopez and Anthony (Darlene) Mitchell, Ruby Bruce & Aggie Thomas, step siblings Pam Jackson & Carroll Rucker and a host of other relatives, friends and former students.

Interment services were held privately but a home going celebration will be planned for all to come out and cherish her memory in the near future. The family wishes to thank all for your love, kind words, prayers and support during this time. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
