Thelma Carter, 85, Belton, Missouri, passed away on March 16, 2017 at Belton Regional Medical Center. She was born April 19, 1931 in Athens, Georgia to the union of Enoch and Evangeline (Patton) Jennings. She was preceded in death by both parents, husbands Lycugus Lewis and Hal Carter, one son Donald, and two daughters Shelia and (Pastor) Sherri. Thelma was educated in the public schools of South Carolina and Cleveland, Ohio. She attended St. Stephen Baptist Church and later became a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. While at Emmanuel, served as a Missionary where she visited nursing homes and worked in the Prison Ministry. When Thelma left Emmanuel Baptist Church she joined Sheffield Assembly of God. After Sheffield, she joined Spirit Life Center and lastly united with Citadel of Prayer. During the past year while Thelma didn't leave her home often, members of Second Missionary Baptist Church of Grandview would come to her home and have service there with her, which she always enjoyed. Thelma worked in the accounting department of Mobil Oil from which she retired after twenty years of employment. She had a love of the Lord and for His people. She genuinely loved her children, neighbors and the people in the medical field who helped take care of her. To cherish Thelma's memory are twelve children, Randy Lewis (Rosetta), Harold Carter both of Kansas City, MO, Leslie Lewis (Wandra) of Liberty, MO, Apostle Donald Jennings (Gloria) of Cleveland, OH, Sharon Scott (Ernest) of Belton, MO, Denise Grant, Lisa Lewis both of Kansas City, MO, Iris Dorsey (Robert) of Jacksonville, FL, Cassandra Carter of Dallas, TX, Shariel Guthrie (Myron) of Kansas City, MO, Pastor Jarie Newsome of Kingsville, MO and Joyce Grant (James) of Lee's Summit, MO; twenty-one grandchildren, thirty-one great grandchildren and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be Monday, March 27, 11:00 a.m. at Second Missionary Baptist Church of Grandview. Interment XII Gates Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
