Thomas (Tommy) Marion Douglas Jr., 86 years of age, passed away December 12, 2019 at Rehabilitation Hospital in Overland Park, Kansas.
Thomas was born on February 14, 1933 in Eskridge, Kansas to Thomas Marion Douglas Sr. and Ruth M. Douglas. Thomas attended school in Eskridge, Kansas before the family's relocation to Kansas City, Missouri, where he graduated from RT Coles High School/Lincoln in 1951. On
October 12, 1953, Thomas was drafted into the United States Army where he was stationed at Fort Sheridan located in Sheridan, Illinois. During his service, he was deployed to the Philippines for 1 year and 6 months. Upon Thomas' Honorable Discharge from the United States Army, he received the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
In 1956 Thomas Married his former spouse Maria C. Douglas and to that union was born Kirk, Marian, Darryl, and Steven Douglas. That union was later dissolved.
Thomas began his career at the United States Postal Service in 1958. During his career at the Post Office, Thomas climbed quickly through the ranks, gaining much respect and admiration from
both supervisors and coworkers. Thomas received his Associate in Applied Science Degree from Metropolitan Community College, where he aspired to become a Chef. Although Thomas did not become a Chef by profession, his food presentation and cooking skills were unmatched in the
kitchen. Thomas was a great influence and he maintained his excellent reputation and continued lifelong friendships even after his retirement from the postal service in 1999.
In 1989, Thomas met and married Juanita L. Douglas and gained 2 additional daughters, Toni and Toya Dilworth.
During his life, Thomas enjoyed spending time with his family, taking trips, going to breakfast with his fellow post office group of friends on the 2nd Saturday of each month, going to the library to get audio books, swimming, cooking, dancing, singing, joking, driving, watching westerns, grocery shopping, and he was an avid sports fan of any and all sports. Thomas never met a stranger and maintained several lifelong friendships.
Thomas was preceded in death by both parents, his sister Janet Douglas, his brother Terry
Douglas, and a great grandson MarcKeith. Thomas was happily married for 31 years and he leaves to mourn his wife, Juanita L. Douglas, his children Kirk Douglas (Theresa) of Kansas City, Missouri, Darryl Douglas (Joy) of Taipei, Taiwan, Marian Douglas of Kansas City, Missouri, Steven Douglas of Kansas City, Missouri, Toni Dilworth of Kansas City, Missouri, and, Toya Harris (Jamal) of Kansas City, MO, Grandchildren Steven Jr., Sholanda, Sharese (Jesse), Sean (Marcy), Timothy, Marquis (Darryl), Armon, Carlos, Tamar, and, Inaya Great Grandchildren,Taylor, Trinity, Ellis, Azriel, Elaina, Bella, Von, Jaxson, Kaylinn, Demarcus, and Prinston. Thomas had a heart of gold, he was adored by all, and he will be greatly missed.
Funeral services Friday, December 27, 10:00 a.m. at Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Interment Leavenworth National Cemetery. Visitation 9:00-10:00 a.m. at the chapel. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
