Valerice Ruth Sutherlin-Bates, 62, was born on December 19, 1955 in Kansas City, Missouri to the union of Charles and Geraldine Sutherlin, and Valerice's biological father William McKinney Sr. Valerice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ronald Bates, and brother Andre Alonzo McKinney.

Valerice was married to Ronald D. Bates on June 20, 1998 until his death in January of 2004.

Valerice was educated in the Kansas City, Missouri School District. She graduated from Central High School, class of 1974. She later furthered her education at Avila University where she studied Nursing and minored in Theology.

Valerice also attended the University of Kansas City Medical and Dental School, where she received certification in dental hygiene. Valerice attended Dycus Beauty School and earned her license in cosmetology.

Valerice worked for Renaissance West as a Drug Abuse Counselor until her health declined. She regularly attended Central Christian Church as a member and enjoyed attending St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church with her mother, children, and grandchildren.

Valerice never missed a moment to tell others about the glory of her God, all while singing her favorite song "Amazing Grace". She enjoyed writing, getting pampered at the nail salon, watching the cooking channel and spending time with family. Valerice was always smiling and her vibrant personality was contagious.

Valerice transitioned from this life to be with her heavenly father on the evening of October 23, 2018. She is survived by: three daughters, LaToya Wright (Larry), Titania Sutherlin and Tracy Sutherlin; brothers, Charles Sutherlin, Jr. (Jenny Hicks) of Kansas City, MO, Aaron Sutherlin, Sr. (Shalonda Triblett) of Las Cruces, NM, Brian Sutherlin, Sr. (Anna Iannelli) of Atlanta, GA, William McKinney, Jr., Quintin McKinney, and Shawn McKinney all of Kansas City, MO; sister, Gwendolyn Cogshell of Lee's Summit, MO; eleven grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
