Obituary

Verbina 'Sally' Banks, 76, KCMO, passed away on September 3, 2016. She was born July 16, 1940 in Holly Grove, Arkansas, the fourth of nine children to the late Lester and Amanda Tibbs. She was preceded in death by her sons, Adolph Herron and Ronzell D. Johnson; brothers, Lester Tibbs, Oliver Tibbs and Quenton Carter; sisters, Erma J. McDaniel, Lue Ethel Partee and Shirley Carter Parks. She spent her early years Holly Grove before moving to Kansas City, Missouri in 1961. As a young girl in Arkansas, her mother decided that because she wasn't the best at working in the cotton fields, she'd be allowed to stay home to cook, clean, and watch the younger children. Taking care of home and family would become her proudest and finest accomplishment. She would eventually become a mother of eleven children and nothing brought her more joy than the huge boisterous family gatherings. Sally enjoyed trips to the casino. The perfect birthday gift for her was having enough money to spend the day at the casino. Being born in July, she was the biggest firecracker of all. She was passionate and excited about her life! God knows if love alone could have saved her, Sweet Sally would still be here with us. She leaves to cherish her memory: nine children, Terry L. Anderson, Ronald Johnson, Patricia A. Johnson, Vince E. Johnson, Booker T. Byers, LaVonnie Johnson, Veronica L. Byers, Yvette Willingham and Anthony E. Johnson; two brothers, John L. Carter and Vell Tibbs; special friend of more than thirty years, James Banks; forty-six grandchildren, over fifty great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; special niece, Rayshello (Barbara Jean) Morrow who was her casino partner; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 10, 11:00 a.m. at New Vision Christian Center. Interment XII Gates Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
