Obituary

Viney Handley, 94, completed her race to be with Jesus on Sunday morning, October 2, 2016. 'Mama Handley' was born November 28, 1921 to the union of the late Andrew and Roberta Burton Burns in Mahare, Texas. When she was two years old, her mother united in marriage to Adolphus Anderson. To this union three sisters: Catherine, Ruth and Virginia Dale, and one brother, Adolphus Jr. were born. Adolphus Sr. adopted and raised Viney. She was known as Viney Anderson. Viney often said Adolphus Sr. was the best father in the world. She was raised in a loving Christian family. At the age of twelve, while at a church revival sponsored by First Baptist Church, Viney professed her faith in Jesus Christ. Later Viney's mother and stepfather founded True Vine Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. Viney attended school in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1944, Viney united in matrimony to Charles Lee Handley. This union was blessed with six children in Kansas City, Kansas. Viney had membership affiliations with Eight Baptist Church (choir member). In 1953, they moved to Kansas City, Missouri and united with Progressive Baptist Church (choir member), Greater Corinthian Non-Denominational (deaconess/choir member), and later co-founded Berean Church. Two years later Viney united with Oark Avenue Baptist Church (deaconess/BTU/choir member) and Rescue Baptist Church of Jesus Christ. She attended Carver Bible College. She was one of the founding members of St. Stephen Baptist Church Prayer Band and was reorganized the young adult choir at Park Avenue Baptist Church. Viney was known in the Christian community as a dynamic singer. Viney was a phenomenal homemaker. She enjoyed reading the bible daily, sewing, cooking, watching baseball, praising God, singing and witnessing. She made sure that she let everyone who she served know, whether she was at the church, grocery store, hospital, etc. She was genuinely interested in whether a person knew the Lord in the pardon of their sins. Viney was a 'Watchman'. She loved Jesus and the church. She was a spiritual mentor to her husband and extended family, and trained her children to follow her example. She was always eager to help many people in need who crossed her path, opening up her home to the homeless. She also made sure that she financially supported the church, international missions and various ministries on a regular basis. Viney was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Lee Handley; father, Andrew; stepfather, Adolphus Sr.; mother, Roberta; brother, Adolphus Jr. and sisters, Ruth and Catherine. She leaves to cherish her loving memory: three sons, Rayfield Burns (Myra); Charles H. Handley (Carol) and Norman K. Handley (Vera Robinson); four daughters, Gloria Pendergrass (Michael), Wanda Sue Thompson (Arthur), Carolyn L. Handley and Sylvia Henderson; one sister, Virginia Dale White; one brother-in-law, Joe Ball; friend of 65 years, Opal Garrett; eleven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces, and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, October 8, 11:00 a.m. at Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. Interment Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at the church.
