Obituary

Walter Merritt, Jr., 69, of Raytown, Missouri, passed away on April 19, 2017 at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. He was born December 26, 1947 to the union of Walter Merritt, Sr. and Mildred (Rentie) Merritt in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His father and three brothers, Elder James Merritt, Lewis Merritt and Ernest Merritt all preceded him in death. Walter relocated to the Kansas City area at a young age, where he received his education and graduated from Lincoln High School. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy for three years, serving in Vietnam before being discharged. Walter accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized. He served as an associate minister for many years assisting in various churches throughout the Kansas City, Missouri and Kansas areas. He truly loved praising the Lord as his favorite words were, 'Can He Do It!' Walter was employed by the Kansas Job Service Center as a veteran representative, retiring in November 2016 after twenty one years of service. He was united in marriage to the former Ms. Elsie Mae Martin and to this union four children were born. The marriage was later dissolved. He later married Ms. Sylvia Merritt who also preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory: two sons, Walter Merritt III and Steven Merritt both of Kansas City, MO; three daughters, Felecia Martin, Beatrice Granville (Jeffrey) and Roberta Merritt all of Kansas City, MO; his mother, Mildred Merritt of Kansas City, MO; three sisters, Beatrice Wimbley (O.C.) of Iowa, Lula Renee Luster (Michael) and Joehanna Merritt both of Kansas City, MO; best friend, Robert Mitchell; fourteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren a host of nephews, nieces other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 29, 11:00 a.m. at Emmanuel Temple Pentecostal Church. Private disposition. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:00 a.m. at the church. Services conducted by Duane E. Harvey Funeral Directors. Condolences may be shared on our website.
